Treat yourself with these five marvellous isolated performances by the one and only Roger Daltrey, the man whose vocals can go from a screeching high to a growling low and hold the power to leave you completely spellbound. Upon learning about that, Daltrey entrusted his affairs with someone else. More strongly even, they tried to sabotage his solo album. The Who management worried about the possible consequences. But not just for myself, I ordered a copy for all of us. I finally had a copy of my own! When it was announced the album was being re-released on cd, I pre-ordered it. So, at the time the album was re-pressed in 1985, I got the LP for my birthday in that year. The album had been out of print for quite some time. The problem was that the house contained just 1 copy. But, of course, it all came down to the music. I loved Quadrophenia as well, with its beautiful fold out cover end the impressive booklet.īut Daltrey’s solo album was, as much as it differed from the Who material, loved just as much within our family. I can dream the album from start to finish. Tommy in particular, was a major hit within our household. On December 5th (Sinterklaas Day in The Netherlands), 1973, I received my very first single: Roger Daltrey’s It’s A Hard Life. It’s A Hard Life (a hit in The Netherlands) and first single (and hit) Giving It All Away are two beautiful songs in which Daltrey gives his all vocally, and convinces (me) emotionally. And I think he was even complaining that he didn’t make any money out of it. “I don’t know whether there will be another Who album,” Townshend said at the time. The singer’s comments echoed what Pete Townshend told Rolling Stone in 2021 in regards to Daltrey’s disappointment about the album’s lack of sales. ![]() Daltrey added that the Who’s fanbase ranges from eight-year-olds to 80-year-olds, but while younger fans are attending the band’s concerts, “Record companies, they just don’t do the same job as they used to.” ![]()
